Galaxy S6 Update build G920FXXS3COK5, Device Security Patches in the month of November

An update that move up the Galaxy S6 recent Android 5.1.1 (Lollipop) to build G920FXXS3COK5. While looking at the build number itself, it may seems like an Android 6.0 Marshmallow update, but not yet. This update's initial changelog says "Your device security has been improved." It means that it is just another security patch update to address the recent Android vulnerabilities. Though the build number and the baseband version has bumped up big time, but the 'kernel version' itself has stayed the same to the previously released build G920FXXU3COI9. So this update brings nothing more any noticeable changes to expect.

In addition, this is a similar update that has also recently landed on the Galaxy S6 edge (SM-g925F) to which dubbed with build number G925FXXS3COK5, and brings the same security enhancements.

Here are the details of G920FXXS3COK5 5.1.1 update:

The G920FXXS3COK5 5.1.1 update is now being held available for the unlocked Galaxy S6 (SM-G920F) owners in France at this time being. This update might be also release to the rest of Europe region soon. So better keep an eye of it either via Over-The-Air and through Smart Switch for PC.

Furthermore, the Galaxy S6 Android 6.0 Marshmallow update is coming very soon. Samsung usually released a new Android OS upgrades in between the month of December and February. Who knows this update might be the preparation needed right before the Android 6.0 Marshmallow came around.

How to Update the Galaxy S6  (SM-G920F) to Android 5.1.1 (Lollipop) build G920FXXS3COK5

  • Make sure to recharge your phone first.
  • Do not forget to backup all of the important data that were stored in the device memory.
  • Your Galaxy S6 must still run on the official software version and has not been rooted nor installed with non-official firmware.

Updating the Galaxy S6 via Over-The-Air (OTA)

This is the usual method on how to check and to perform an update on Galaxy S6 to the latest software version.  This method is what we called Firmware Update  Over-The-Air and so-called as FOTA or simply OTA update. In most often cases, a notification message will be directly sent out to you by your network provider and by Samsung itself, telling you that there is a new update that has now available for download.  This approach requires you to prepare a strong WiFi connection,  and so it might happen sometimes that one did not receive any software update notification messages; (1) If and when the device is out of range during the software update roll out  period, (2) Automatic update has been turned off in the device Settings.
However, We can still manually check for the update instead.

Here’s how to do it manually:
  • From your Galaxy S6 Home screen tap on Apps.
  • Select the Settings gear icon.
  • Tap About device.
  • Tap Software update.
  • Tap Check for an update.

It will then notify you that a new update is available for download. But it also says that “Your device software is up to date“, and there is no software update is yet available for grab. You can simply choose Install now if you do so or else Install later if you want to get the update in later time.

But if ever you might have had received this message while checking software update that says something like “The operating system on your device has been modified in an unauthorized way. Try downloading software updates using Smart Switch on your computer or visit a customer service center.”  This is a warning message that only appears for those devices that have been rooted and installed with modified and unofficial firmware.  So to be able to get the Software OTA update again, you must Unroot the Galaxy S6  first and removed any modification that has been installed on it.
