Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow Updates Officially Release by Samsung

Samsung has finally started the release of the  Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow update for the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge. The first Android Marshmallow updates were officially pushed  to South Korean owners of the Galaxy S6 variants preferably with model number SM-G920S, SM-G920K and SM-G920L, and the Galaxy S6 edge models such as the SM-G925S, SM-G925K and SM-G925L, to which all said variants are from  major carrier providers in South Korea. While on the other hand, the Galaxy S6 Edge+ might also follow shortly.

Furthermore, it is still unclear to when Samsung release the said Android Marshmallow upgrade for rest of the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge variants.  But since we already knew that the beta released are still in undergoing testing  process in England,  and are about to end its  finalization stage.  Also  to mention for the United States Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 lineup, there still none from any major carriers has yet begun talking about the Marshmallow update. But given that that Marshmallow update has finally arrived, it is only a great indication that worldwide users may get the said Marshmallow update very very soon.

Thank's to  [Kim Hyun] for bringing this in.

Only those who are residents in India, whilst those from Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Nepal may also get the same update.   So better check the update manually if you haven't received the notification message yet, its either via Over-The-Air and or via Smart Switch for PC.

How to Update the Galaxy S6  & S6 Edge to Android 5.1.1 (Lollipop) build VU3DOL5

  • Make sure to recharge your phone first.
  • Do not forget to backup all of the important data that were stored in the device memory.
  • Your Galaxy S6 must still run on the official software version and has not been rooted nor installed with non-official firmware.

Updating the Galaxy S6 via Over-The-Air (OTA)

This is the usual method on how to check and to perform an update on Galaxy S6 to the latest software version.  This method is what we called Firmware Update  Over-The-Air and so-called as FOTA or simply OTA update. In most often cases, a notification message will be directly sent out to you by your network provider and by Samsung itself, telling you that there is a new update that has now available for download.  This approach requires you to prepare a strong WiFi connection,  and so it might happen sometimes that one did not receive any software update notification messages; (1) If and when the device is out of range during the software update roll out  period, (2) Automatic update has been turned off in the device Settings.
However, We can still manually check for the update instead.

Here’s how to do it manually:
  • From your Galaxy S6 Home screen tap on Apps.
  • Select the Settings gear icon.
  • Tap About device.
  • Tap Software update.
  • Tap Check for an update.

It will then notify you that a new update is available for download. But it also says that “Your device software is up to date“, and there is no software update is yet available for grab. You can simply choose Install now if you do so or else Install later if you want to get the update in later time.

But if ever you might have had received this message while checking software update that says something like “The operating system on your device has been modified in an unauthorized way. Try downloading software updates using Smart Switch on your computer or visit a customer service center.”  This is a warning message that only appears for those devices that have been rooted and installed with modified and unofficial firmware.  So to be able to get the Software OTA update again, you must Unroot the Galaxy S6  first and removed any modification that has been installed on it.

Update the Galaxy S6 using  a Computer via Smart Switch for PC

Download Smart Switch for PC

You have to choose the one that is specifically built for computer, depends on what you have either a PC or Mac.  Once you installed Smart Switch, all you need to do is to connect your Samsung Galaxy S6 on your  computer using the supplied USB  cable.
  1. Open Smart Switch in your computer.
  2. Connect the Galaxy S6  into the computer using the supplied USB data cable.
  3. Smart Switch will automatically prompt you if the update is available. Just click on the “update” then the “OK”  button to begin updating your Galaxy S6.

Once the update is made, you may now check the technical details of the new update, from Home screen  simply touch the Settings gear icon and then tap About device.
