Device Update via Over-The-Air (OTA)

This is the usual method on how to check and to perform an update on Galaxy S6, S6 edge, S6 edge+, or S6 active to the latest software version.  This method is what we called Firmware Update  Over-The-Air and so-called as FOTA or simply OTA update. In most often cases, a notification message will be directly sent out to you by your network provider and by Samsung itself, telling you that there is a new update that has now available for download.  This approach requires you to prepare a strong WiFi connection,  and so it might happen sometimes that one did not receive any software update notification messages; (1) If and when the device is out of range during the software update roll out  period, (2) Automatic update has been turned off in the device Settings.
However, We can still manually check for the update instead.

Here’s how to do it manually:
  • From your Galaxy S6, S6 edge, S6 edge+, or S6 active  Home screen tap on Apps.
  • Select the Settings gear icon.
  • Tap About device.
  • Tap Software update.
  • Tap Check for an update.

It will then notify you that a new update is available for download. But it also says that “Your device software is up to date“, and there is no software update is yet available for grab. You can simply choose Install now if you do so or else Install later if you want to get the update in later time.

But if ever you might have had received this message while checking software update that says something like “The operating system on your device has been modified in an unauthorized way. Try downloading software updates using Smart Switch on your computer or visit a customer service center.”  This is a warning message that only appears for those devices that have been rooted and installed with modified and unofficial firmware.  So to be able to get the Software OTA update again, you must Unroot the Galaxy S6, S6 edge, and S6 edge+ first, and or removed any changes that has been installed in it.

How to Update the Galaxy S6 Edge via Over-The-Air (OTA)

This is the usual method on how to check and to perform an update on Galaxy S6 edge  to the latest software version.

  • From your Galaxy S6 edge Home screen tap on Apps.

So to be able to get the Software OTA update again, you must Unroot the Galaxy S6 edge first, and or removed any modification that has been installed in it.

Update the Galaxy S6 edge using Smart Switch for PC

Download Smart Switch for PC

You have to choose the one that is specifically built for computer, depends on what you have either a PC or Mac.  Once you installed Smart Switch, all you need to do is to connect your Samsung Galaxy S6 edge on your  computer using the supplied USB  cable.
  1. Open Smart Switch in your computer.
  2. Connect the Galaxy S6  edge into the computer using the supplied USB data cable.
  3. Smart Switch will automatically prompt you if the update is available. Just click on the “Update” then the “OK”  button to start the update.

Some of this update were initially released in late July, but in most cases the update came around in between from  first to the second week of August.

United States Updates

The factory unlock version of the Galaxy S6 has gotten the first July security patch update in United States alone.  This specific variant  is the Galaxy S6 SM-G920T to which identical to the T-Mobile's variant.

For the U.S major carrier,  first in the row is the AT&T's update to which officially rolled out on July 19, 2016. The update brings nothing more but the July's security patch and was also stated as  device security improvements. Below are the technical details on each specific devices.

All of the above released builds are exactly alike when we are going to compare the "kernel version"  being used on each build. The G920FXXS4DPG2 and  G925FXXS4DPG2  were massively rolled out to most of the European countries. The only differences to other builds might have affect some technicalities to some countries like the G920FXXS4DPG3, and  G925FXXS4DPG3 were sent out in Luxembourg alone. While the  G920FXXU4DPG8, and G925FXXU4DPG8 landed in the The Netherlands, and Switzerland. And lastly, the G920FXXS4DPG9, and  G925FXXS4DPG9 were also exclusively released in Spain's Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge users.

Released builds for the SIM-Locked or Carrier Branded Galaxy  S6 and S6 Edge version in Europe:

Australia's Galaxy S6 and S6 edge haven't gotten  the July Security patch update but it might receive the August Security patch update as early as possible.

Unfortunately, the Galaxy S6 Edge+ SM-G928I has showed no movements so far, as there were no newer updates related to the July's Security patch as of this time being. It might soon arrive this coming few days, or it might also skip the July's update and are now queued to the August security patch.

Updating the Galaxy S6, S6 Edge, and S6 edge+ via Over-The-Air (OTA)

This is the usual method on how to check and to perform an update on Galaxy S6 edge  to the latest software version.

  • From your Galaxy S6 edge Home screen tap on Apps.

So to be able to get the Software OTA update again, you must Unroot the Galaxy S6 edge first, and or removed any modification that has been installed in it.

Update the Galaxy S6 edge+ using Smart Switch for PC

Download Smart Switch for PC

You have to choose the one that is specifically built for computer, depends on what you have either a PC or Mac.  Once you installed Smart Switch, all you need to do is to connect your Samsung Galaxy S6 on your  computer using the supplied USB  cable.
  1. Open Smart Switch in your computer.
  2. Connect the Galaxy S6  into the computer using the supplied USB data cable.
  3. Smart Switch will automatically prompt you if the update is available. Just click on the “update” then the “OK”  button to begin updating your Galaxy S6.

AT&T Galaxy S6 SM-G920A G920AUCU3BOI2 Official Android 5.1.1 Lollipop Update Rolling Out

If you’ve got the AT&T Samsung Galaxy S6 (SM-G920A) and S6 Edge (SM-G925A), you folks may have gotten an update to Android 5.1.1 Lollipop early this morning. Yes! AT&T has finally started rolling the Android 5.1.1 Lollipop.  This update will bump the Galaxy S6 to  baseband version G920AUCU3BOI2, and it weighs in at staggering 660.90 MB (or a bit less, according to the screenshot above).  Meanwhile,  the Galaxy S6 edge will move its baseband version to G925AUCU3BOI2.

The push might be in connection to the Samsung Pay’s launch in the United States.  Though the initial changelog details have not yet been confirmed, as AT&T's Support pages isn't updated yet. But on Samsung US support pages it says that it has  Network Enhancements (CIQ) included in it.

But if we just base on the update's enourmous file size and looking back to Android 5.1.1 update running on other carrier's Galaxy S6. It should have some few changes to notice beforehand. You may then notice the new rounded Apps icons and some new features like the Samsung Pay, Live streaming in the camera app and UHQ audio, wallpaper motion effect, rotate button in calculator, might also have some few apps from AT&T itself and etc.

What are the technical details of the update?

Here are the details of the G920AUCU3BOI2 Android 5.1.1 (Lolipop) update:

Device name: Samsung Galaxy S6 (AT&T USA)
Model number: SM-G920A
Android version: 5.1.1
Baseband version: G920AUCU3BOI2
Kernel Version: 3.10.61-5527015 dpi@SWHD2407 #1
Build Number: LMY47X.G920AUCU3BOI2
AP G920AUCU3BOI2
CSC G920AATT3BOI2
CP  G920AUCU3BOI2
File size: 660.90 MB

Screenshots:

Fortunately, the update is only available via Over-The-Air (OTA) over a Wi-Fi connection and couldn't be seen via Smart Switch for PC/MAC. The release might run into several days and not everyone may get the update at the same time.  So if you haven’t yet gotten your update, you can check for it manually by heading into Settings > About device > Software update. If you'll received a message that says something like "Software Update Interrupted. No update is available for your device at this time. Please try again in 24 hours", Don't panic,  it only means that the server is busy, so you should keep on checking until you'll get an open slot and you may then download the update.

AT&T Galaxy S6 OTA update G920AUCU2AOF4 Rolling Out, It's not the 5.1.1 Lollipop Yet

AT&T has just released another OTA update on Samsung Galaxy S6 (SM-G920A) to which will bump the firmware build number to G920AUCU2AOF4 from G920AUCU2AOF3. But yet again, this is not the awaited Android 5.1.1 Lollipop update yet, that anyone might have waited. The update will still remain in Android version 5.0.2 and not the 5.1.1 that we have been expecting for.

Even though it is not the 5.1.1 update but there something much more important stuff in it. The most useful part is the Android OS Security Enhancements, this is Google's new security patches that will going to fix the Stagefright bug. This is the same patches inclusion like the ones that has just recently rolled out on Galaxy S6 Active (SM-G890A), and likewise on Sprint Galaxy S6 (SM-G920P) and Galaxy S6 Edge (SM-G925P). On the other hand, we are also expecting T-Mobile and Verizon to roll out their own update in response to the Stagefright bug.

Here are the technical details about the G920AUCU2AOF4 5.0.2 update:

Android version: 5.0.2
Baseband version: G920AUCU2AOF4
Kernel version: 3.10.61-4823236
Build number: LRX22G.G920AUCU2AOF4
