Canada's Galaxy S6, S6 edge and S6 edgeplus Receiving August 2017 Android Security Updates

Canadian owners of the Galaxy S6, S6 edge, and the S6 edge+ has started receiving the monthly Android security updates. It is bundled and are still based in the recent Android 7.0 Nougat.  But this time, the said updates includes the August 1, 2017 Android security patch level.

In addition, among all major Canadian carriers, Bell's Galaxy S6, S6 and the S6 edge+ support pages has now updated to show the information about the release.  But other carriers such Telus, Rogers, and the rest might also have their own release schedules.

Telus, Bell, Rogers Galaxy S6, S6 edge and S6 edge+ Receiving July 2017 Security Updates

Way back in April, Galaxy S6, S6 edge and S6 edge+ has gotten its Android 7.0 Nougat updates.  Two months after, another Nougat update had been released that brings the June 2017 Android security patches. This time around, Canadian carriers are also started pushing another security updates for the month of July 2017.  Again, these updates brings nothing any new features to the earlier Android 7.0 Nougat, but it only applies the latest Android Security Maintenance Release (SMR).

Among all major Canadian carriers such as Telus, Bell, and Rogers, has started the rolling out of the said July 2017 security  updates. While the rest of all Canadian mobile network providers, including the factory unlocked version will also get the same treatment anytime soon.

Here are the details:

Canadian Variants Galaxy S6 G920W8 and S6 edge G928W8 Android 7.0 Nougat Updates

Since all Canadian carriers has already pushed the Android 7.0 Nougat update on Galaxy S6 edge+ few days ago and hopefully made an announcements that the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge will also get its Nougat update beginning May 1st.  Well, it seems what the folks promised is accurate since we  have just spotted the Android 7.0 Nougat update the Galaxy S6 SM-G920W8 and the Galaxy S6 edge SM-G925W8 at Samsung's firmware server.

Here's what we've got:

Again, the rolling out hasn't started yet, but it's a good indication that the said Nougat update will surely arrive on these coming few days.  So, better keep an eye of the said Nougat updates if you owned either the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge.

How to Update the Galaxy S6, S6 edge and S6 edge+ via Over-The-Air (OTA)

This is the usual method on how to check and to perform the device update.  This method is what we called Firmware Update  Over-The-Air and so-called as FOTA or simply OTA update. In most often cases, a notification message will be directly sent out to you by your network provider and by Samsung itself, telling you that there is a new update that has now available for download.

This approach requires you to prepare a strong WiFi connection,  and so it might happen sometimes that one did not receive any software update notification messages:
1. If and when the device is out of range during the software update roll out  period.
2. Automatic update has been turned off in the device Settings.
However, we can still manually check for the update instead.

Here’s how to do it manually:
  • From your device Home screen tap on Apps.
  • Select the Settings gear icon.
  • Tap About device.
  • Tap Software update.
  • Tap Check for an update.

It will then notify you that a new update is available for download. But it also says that “Your device software is up to date“, and there is no software update is yet available for grab. You can simply choose Install now if you do so or else Install later if you want to get the update in later time.

But if ever you might have had received this message while checking software update that says something like “The operating system on your device has been modified in an unauthorized way. Try downloading software updates using Smart Switch on your computer or visit a customer service center.”  This is a warning message that only appears for those devices that have been rooted and installed with modified and unofficial firmware.  So to be able to get the Software OTA update again, you must Unroot the Galaxy S6 first, and or removed any modification that has been installed in it.

Update the Galaxy S6 edge+ using Smart Switch for PC

Download Smart Switch for PC

You have to choose the one that is specifically built for computer, depends on what you have either a PC or Mac.  Once you installed Smart Switch, just simply connect your device to your  computer using the supplied USB  cable.
  1. Open Smart Switch in your computer.
  2. Connect the device into the computer using the supplied USB data cable.
  3. Smart Switch will automatically prompt you if the update is available. Just click on the “update” then the “OK”  button to begin updating your Galaxy S6, S6 edge and S6 edge+ .

July Security Patch Update for Galaxy S6, S6 Edge and S6 Edge+ Roundup

Samsung has once again released the new Android update for Galaxy S6, S6 Edge, and the S6 edge+. This recent updates were part of the monthly security patch update to get rid of now recently known Android vulnerabilities.  This time around we gathered around the July's security patch update to which has now replaces the last June's released builds. Here are the list of each official software updates on all Samsung Galaxy S6, S6 Edge, S6 edge, and S6 edge + (plus) specific models around the world.

Some of this update were initially released in late July, but in most cases the update came around in between from  first to the second week of August.

United States Updates

The factory unlock version of the Galaxy S6 has gotten the first July security patch update in United States alone.  This specific variant  is the Galaxy S6 SM-G920T to which identical to the T-Mobile's variant.

For the U.S major carrier,  first in the row is the AT&T's update to which officially rolled out on July 19, 2016. The update brings nothing more but the July's security patch and was also stated as  device security improvements. Below are the technical details on each specific devices.

Australia's Galaxy S6 and S6 edge haven't gotten  the July Security patch update but it might receive the August Security patch update as early as possible.

Unfortunately, the Galaxy S6 Edge+ SM-G928I has showed no movements so far, as there were no newer updates related to the July's Security patch as of this time being. It might soon arrive this coming few days, or it might also skip the July's update and are now queued to the August security patch.

Telus, Bell Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow update builds G920W8VLU3CPC5 & G925W8VLU3CPC5 has rolled out in phases

Despite of some issues causing  delayed, some of the Canadian carriers like Telus, Bell , Wind, and Videotron has released the Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow update on Galaxy S6 SM-G920W8 and  Galaxy S6 edge SM-G925W8 in phases.  While some other carriers such as Rogers has not issued any Android M for now.  This update was supposedly expected  earlier in March, just like the Galaxy S6 edge+ SM-G928W8 which has gotten and received the said Marshmallow update beforehand.  The delayed was cause of a bug discovered during its testing stage to which affects the performance of the device.

However, the said Android M updates came around dubbed as build version G920W8VLU3CPC5 on the Galaxy S6 whilst the S6 edge got the G925W8VLU3CPC5 build. Both builds were already equipped with April 2016 Android security patches, to which indicates that its newly revised builds if the said Android M.

Some of you have been experiencing connectivity issues with your Samsung Galaxy S6/S6 Edge devices over the past couple of weeks and we’re happy to report that a fix is on the way.

We’ve been working around the clock with Samsung to get the right fix in place and starting November 16th it will be rolling out in phases over November 16th to 30th – If you’re wondering, the root cause is related to the latest Samsung Android 5.1.1 update.

It’s taken longer than we had hoped to get here and we appreciate your patience. Fixing the problem is a little bit more complex for us because of the VoLTE capability we offer on these devices.

The connectivity issue is caused  by the new implementation of Voice over LTE (VoLTE) support on the new devices. The said VoLTE support brings a much higher quality phone calls as it has a much higher speed in connectivity.

Furthermore, the BOJ7 update is not only sent out to Rogers Galaxy S6 / S6 Edge,  but also being held available and release to Telus, Fido, and Koodo Galaxy S6/S6 edge owners. You may now manually check the update by hitting your  device Settings > About device > Software update.

      • A security patch to which an address to the Stagefright vulnerability in picture and video messaging (SMS).
      • Redesigned Apps icons, taken from Galaxy Note 5 which has a rounded corner.
      • Live Broadcasting.
      • The rests are some  enhancements to Apps drawer, camera, audio and more.

However, Bell and Telus might also follow this coming couple of days, but it is still unclear to which 5.1.1 build they are about to release.  We'll just update this post when that time comes around.

The update build G920W8VLU2BOI6 5.1.1 is now seen via Samsung Smart Switch and might as well gradually started to roll out via Over-The-Air (OTA).  So make sure to check the update right now if you haven't received the notification message yet, by simply  hitting your device Settings > About device > Software update > Check for Update.
